One comedian makes a tasteless joke about an actor's wife. The actor laughs, walks onto the stage, slaps the comedian across the face on live national television in front of millions of people, smiles and returns to his seat. Less than an hour later that actor wins an award and uses his acceptance speech to justify his violence. At one point, the tear-stained actor goes so far as to say that he's being "called on by God" to protect his family. That's right, it's God's fault that Will Smith assaulted Chris Rock in front of the entire world.
Since when is physically attacking someone for a shitty joke, acceptable behavior? Because that's exactly what Will Smith did. With no apology to the victim. And, even more disturbing, was the fact that the Hollywood elite, hundreds of them, patted him on the back and applauded rather than demanding that he be escorted from the premises.
Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will get you punched in the face. Violence, it seems, is the new black.
